Deep-sea data – the Bathysphere 2025 symposium

The 3rd Bergen Bathysphere Science Symposium took place this week in Espegrend Marine Biological Station outside Bergen. Bathysphere gathers deep-sea scientists across disciplines, institutions and countries, creating a venue for sharing both knowledge and enthusiasm for the deep-sea.

This year’s symposium had 40 participants who spent two intense days attending workshops, networking, and having discussions spanning a wide range of topics, from optimal deep-sea cruise planning to inspiring public engagement.

OBIS-GBIF Norway node staff member Katrine Kongshavn from the University Museum of Bergen attended the meeting with a presentation on “Marine biodiversity data: where to find, how to share. GBIF, OBIS and FAIR principles”, and a practical session on how to access, download and cite data from both GBIF and OBIS. Both were well received and inspired a lot of good discussions about data management – hopefully new data will be published soon as a result. Thank you to the Bathysphere team for brilliant organizing, and for inviting us!
